Hero: Barney Bussey

October 10, 2002

Barney Bussey was a major reason behind the Devils' success in the late 1970's when they won 38 consecutive games and came within 3 seconds of a Class AA championship. He was a terror on both sides of the ball, breaking long runs and chasing down QBs.

But Barney didn't stop there. He became an All-American defensive back at I-AA South Carolina State, leading them to the I-AA finals. Barney played several years for the Cincinnati Bengals after starting with the USFL Memphis Showboats. After playing in the SuperBowl with Cincinnati, Barney finished his career with Tampa Bay.

In 2020, Barney was honored as one of the top 50 players in the 50-year history of the MEAC, thanks to his outstanding play at South Carolina State.

Barney lives in Cincinnati and remains active with charity organizations.
