The future continues to look bright for the Red Devil football program as the Devil Junior Varsity improved its record to 4-0 with a 19-7 whipping to the Greenbrier Wolfpack near Evans last Thursday.
Denzel Gunby, starting at quarterback in place of an ill Garrett Mohr, started the Junior Devils game with Greenbrier off well with a 6-yard pass to Bond Turner. Allen Crite and Darrien Gladmon ran the ball hard on the drive, with Gladmon scoring on a five-yard run. Russ Spratlin’s PAT kick gave the Devils a 7-0 lead.
Keldrick Cunningham sacked the Greenbrier quarterback for a 9-yard loss, thus ending a promising drive for the Wolfpack.
After a few back-and-forth series, the Devils took over at their own 23. Gunby found Tyler Banks open for a 77-yard bomb for the Devils’ second score. The extra point failed, leaving the Devils with a 13-0 lead.
Lincoln County stopped the Wolfpack on its next drive, but fumbled the succeeding punt to give Greenbrier the ball at the LC 23. The Devil D held off the threat and preserved the 13-0 lead at halftime.
The Pack returned the second-half kickoff to the LC 34, but the young Devil defense again stopped the Columbia County lads. Unfortunately the Devils fumbled the pigskin back to Greenbrier, who scored to close the gap to 13-7.
The Wolfpack didn’t smile for long, as Gladmon returned the ensuing kickoff all the way for the score and a 19-7 Red Devil lead. The Devils played hard the rest of the game and the reserves came in and did a great job, holding the Pack scoreless for the final minutes. Defensively, Brian Herring made a great one-handed sack on the Pack’s quarterback and Shawntravious Jennings caused a fumble.
The undefeated Junior Devils put their perfect record on the line this Thursday at 5:00 at The Bud when Harlem’s Bullpuppies come visiting.
