Aquinas and Warren County continued to roll in Region 7-A, while two mild upsets marked the rest of Class A in week 5.
Aquinas whipped Hancock Central 40-14 to improve to 5-0. The Irish are currently the top-scoring Class A team with an average of 48.3 points per game, and also lead in points differential with 37 per game. Charlton County is second in both (44.8 scored and 34 differential). The season gets much together this week for the Augusta private school when the Irish travel to play tough Wilkinson County. Warren County drove through Lincolnton twice last Friday but didn't stop to say hello. The Screaming Devils got back on the winning track with a 47-24 clubbing of the McCormick Chiefs at the Chiefs' new hunting ground. [game story] Our Devils visit Warren County this coming Friday to open their 7-A schedule.
Washington-Wilkes showed improved play Friday night, but the home-standing Tigers were still winless when their feline cousins from Commerce headed back up the road. The 8-A team won their first game of the season with a 41-34 victory. Commerce's Cody Streetman rushed 31 times for 265 yards and 5 TDs. [game story]
Wilkinson County lost to AAA Dougherty 21-19 Saturday night in Albany when the home team scored on a long pass with about a minute left. [game story] Twiggs County had an open date.
The two mild upsets in Class A happened in Regions 4 and 6. Marion County edged Hawkinsville 21-14 in 4-A, and Darlington beat Bremen 17-7 in 6-A. Charlton County (54-0 over Irwin County) and Clinch County (51-7 over Bacon County) continued to roll toward their big showdown in 2-A. Wilcox County blasted Lanier County 46-14.
In 3-A, Savannah Christian got a big win over AAAA Effingham County, 28-7. Effingham is coach for former WaCo and Valdosta Rick Tomberlin. ECI whipped Treutlen 41-7 and Johnson County beat Portal 34-14.
Wesleyan beat Holy Innocents 24-10 in a big game in the private school region, 5-A.
Thomson lost to Washington County 26-6 in a 3-AAA crossover game. The varsity Bulldogs may have been tired from their open date last week, when they played against our JV on Thursday. [game story]
