10/1 Recap: Wilkinson beats W-W, Warren Rebounds

October 02, 2010

On October 1, Wilkinson County and Warren County won in 7-A, while Bowdon and Hawkinsville lost key region games.

Wilkinson County whipped Washington-Wilkes 28-7 in Irwinton to affirm the Warriors as one of the leaders in Region 7-A. The game was close at the half with Wilkinson leading 8-0, but allowed another score in the third. The Tigers closed the gap to 15-7 on a 95-yard kickoff return by a freshman, but turnovers proved fatal to W-W. Wilkinson will play Twiggs and Hancock before hosting Warren County October 29 and traveling to Lincolnton November 5. The 1-4 Tigers play at Hancock before their Lincolnton visit October 15.

Warren County rebounded from their 27-0 loss to our Red Devils last week with a 46-13 drubbing of Twiggs County. The 4-2 Screaming Devils, along with the 4-1 Aquinas Irish, look to be strong contenders for the other two playoff spots in 7-A. The Irish were off last night before traveling to Twiggs County this coming week.

Elsewhere in Class A, it was not a good night for some other Red Devils. The Western Red Devils from Bowdon lost to Trion 19-14 in a 6-A battle. Hawkinsville lost to Greenville 26-21 in 4-A.

Athens Academy nipped George Walton Academy 20-13 in two overtimes in an 8-A showdown [game story]. Commerce beat Athens Christian 28-7 [game story].

Charlton County, Wilcox County, Savannah Christian, Wesleyan, and Johnson County [game story] all won big. Clinch County had the week off. Charlton visits Wilcox County this coming Friday in the second of three 2-A showdowns. Clinch beat Wilcox 33-14 earlier. Clinch and Charlton meet November 5.
