The Class A quarterfinals will feature two rematches from 2009: Savannah Christian at Lincoln County, and Wilcox County at Wesleyan. ELCA will visit Clinch County in a battle of unbeatens.
Savannah Christian jumped on Charlton County early and often enroute to a 37-6 win in The Swamp. The Raiders scored on a 47-yard run on the second play of the game, and led 17-0 at the half. The Raiders sacked the Indian QB nine times and grabbed three interceptions. Charlton, who had lost to only Clinch County and Wilcox County, had to endure the GHSA's mercy rule running clock in the fourth quarter, possibly for the first time ever. [Game Story]
Clinch County rolled to a 28-0 halftime lead before finishing off Miller County 35-14. [Game Story]
After a nearly three hour delay due to lighting problems, Wesleyan whipped homestanding Athens Academy 35-14. [Game Story]
Before an overflow crowd in Wrightsville, Wilcox County super QB Nick Marshall rushed for 181 yards, passed for 257 yards, had responsibility for a combined 8 touchdowns, and snared an interception while playing man-on-man with the home team's star receiver. Neither defense showed up much, as the final tally was 60-39 as the previously unbeaten Johnson County Trojans fell to the Patriots. [Game Story]
Undefeated Eagles Landing Christian Academy ousted George Walton Academy 35-21. GWA was the 2009 Class AAA champs in GISA. ELCA lost a coin-toss and must now travel to Homerville to take on powerhouse Clinch County.
Wilkinson County overcame Bremen 26-15, and will host ECI in the next round. ECI beat Region 4-A champ Marion Co. 29-11.
All teams from regions 1, 4, 6, and 8 have been eliminated. A rematch between Clinch County and Wilcox County remains the favorite pick for the Class A finals.
