Games Delayed 2 Weeks; Laney Replaces Abbeville

July 24, 2020

GHSA Board of Trustees voted July 20 to delay the 2020 season by 2 weeks. Games will start the weekeend of September 4 rather than the weekend of August 22.

This change was made due to the COVID-19 virus. The GHSA will continue to monitor conditions statewide, and may make additional changes to the fall sports seasons.

The Devils' 2020 season will start with a special neutral-site matchup against Clinch County in Statesboro. Kickoff is at 6:00 September 5 in Georgia Southern's Paulsen Stadium.

The original schedule called for the Devils to visit Abbeville September 11. With the GHSA vote, that game would move to September 25. Abbeville has a game scheduled with Belton-Honea Path that night, so the Devils were forced to find a new opponent. Lincoln County will host the Laney Wildcats from Augusta for the first gridiron meeting of the two schools. This will give the Devils six home games in Coach Lee Chomskis' inaugural season.

Homecoming will be October 23 against Social Circle, while Senior Night will be November 13 when Greene County visits.

The Junior Varsity kicks off September 10 in Harlem. Other opponents include Elbert County, Greenbrier (9th grade), GCIS, Washington-Wilkes, and Thomson (9th grade).

The South Carolina High School League voted July 15 to shorten their 2020 regular season to seven region games. Abbeville only has five region games, so that leaves the Panther-Devil game still a possibility.

Keep in mind all of this is very subject to change. 2020 - a year like no other!
