W-W, Twiggs Win Openers

September 02, 2006

Washington-Wilkes beat Warren County 35-16 in a game featuring two of our Devils' biggest rivals. Meanwhile, down in the south Georgia swamp, Clinch County took an early lead but couldn't hold on as the heavy-underdog Panthers fell to AA-top ranked Charlton County 14-8.

Harlem again gave Evans a tough battle, but lost by 5, 21-16. The Bulldogs will visit Buddy Bufford Field next Friday night for the first Lewis-Campbell coaching matchup.

The biggest surprise of the night of local interest was not who won the game, but how close the final score was. Twiggs County defeated GMC 26-12 in a Region 7-A game. Twiggs has been ranked as high as #6 in a preseason poll. Reports indicate two of the Cobra touchdowns came when they threw against a substitute GMC safety when the starter was out due to an injury. That report confirmed one thing we already expected: Twiggs County is fast!

Hancock Central fought AAAA Rockdale County to a 21-all tie. This speaks well for the Bulldogs season, and another good team in the 7-A race.

Hawkinsville defeated AAA Perry 17-6, while Johnson County whipped East Laurens 34-6.

Commerce outslugged Rabun County 38-27, and Athens Academy beat Oglethorpe County 30-12.
