Devils Host Abbeville to Open 2018 Campaign

August 13, 2018

Lincoln County will open its 2018 varsity football season this Friday night when ever-powerful Abbeville comes calling to Larry Campbell Stadium at Buddy Bufford Field. The pigskin will fly at 7:30.

The game will mark the debut for new Red Devil head coach Michael Pollock. He has led the football squad since the beginning of spring practice, and has had the young men at several camps and 7-on-7 meetings before last week's scrimmage against Evans High.

Coach Pollock is the first man since 1954 to be named as Red Devil head coach without first being a Red Devil player or assistant coach.

He is also the first since that same year to become the Devil head coach with previous head coaching experience. Coach Pollock was previously the head ball coach at Habersham Central, Americus-Sumter, and Cook. He was the offensive coordinator for Class AAAAAAA Grayson last season.

Reports from last Friday's scrimmage indicate the Devils looked good despite a few correctable miscues. Kolbi Ferguson, son of Red Devil legend Roy Lee Ferguson, has moved from the line to the backfield and looks to be a leading ground-gainer.

The Devils return several key players from last year's 7-win team, but also have some big holes to fill. Several new coaches will be under pressure to uphold the Devils' decades-long winning tradition.

Lincoln County starts the season with what may be its touchest opponent all year. Abbeville has won the last three South Carolina Class AA State Championships. The Panthers are 40-3-1 over the past three seasons. The tie, 7-7 in Lincolnton, was the only blemish in their 2016 season. Abbeville looks to be loaded again this year.

A large crowd is expected for this matchup of two of the best football programs in Georgia and South Carolina. Be there early to cheer on the Red Devils!
