The Red Devil Debate Team won the 2003 Class A Debate Championship February 8 in Peachtree City. The Devils, coached by Mrs. Lee Robinson, brought home the top trophy after finishing as runner-up the past two years. The Devils have won the region title for seven straight years!
Coach Robinson provided us with a first-hand report of the team's victory:
The affirmative team of Kellie Bennett/Chris Edwards and the negative team of Emyle Davis/David Price finished with a combined 7-1 record and defeated runner-up and defending state champion Trion High School by a margin of nine speaker points. This marks the first time in school history that an LCHS team has won a state debate title. LCHS also took top speaker honors; Kellie Bennett was the top affirmative and top overall speaker, marking the third consecutive year that she has received a state top position speaker award. In addition, Chris Edwards was the second-ranked overall speaker, and David Price was the top negative speaker. This is the first time since reclassification that a Class A school has swept the top team, top affirmative speaker, and top negative speaker awards.
