Sept. 3 Roundup: Twiggs Shutout, Aquinas Surges

September 04, 2010

Could there be some surprises in Region 7-A this season?

Well, maybe! Last night Aquinas demolished Telfair County 67-14 in McRae. That's the most points the Irish have scored since Aquinas was formed from Boys Catholic High in the 1950s. Brenda Douglas scored 5 TDs in the first half, and QB Dane Anderson passed for two and rushed in another. Aquinas is now 2-0 and travels to Social Circle next Friday. The Irish could be 4-0 when they travel to Wilkinson County September 24. [game story]

Meanwhile, over in Jeffersonville, Butler High from Augusta shutout the Cobras 23-0. Twiggs County is now 0-2. Butler has won two in a row and not allowed a single point this season after the Bulldogs ended a 41-game losing streak.

Wilkinson County scored on an 8-yard pass with 41 seconds left to edge Southwest Macon 14-7. The Warriors evened their record at 1-1. [game story]

Washington-Wilkes fell to 0-2 with a 20-8 loss to 5-A Holy Innocents. HI led 6-0 at the half and 13-8 late in the game before a Tiger fumble led to the final HI TD.

Warren County blasted Harlem 25-0 to go 2-0. Senior RB Coby Reynolds rank for 3 TDs with a fourth called back. We'll know more about this year's Screaming Devils as they host George Walton Academy next and then travel to McCormick Sept. 17 before hosting our Red Devils Sept. 24. GWA is 1-0 after moving to the GHSA from the GISA where it has been a football title contender for many years. [game story]

To finish out our 7-A review, Hancock Central edged Social Circle 32-29 to earn its first win against two losses this season.

Around Class A, Wilcox County blanked AA Bleckley County 35-0 while Charlton County overpowered AAAAA Bradwell Institute 42-10. Clinch County ran by Brantley County 48-27, and ECI thumped Claxton 27-0. ELCA struggled to edge AAA Henry County 13-6.

Wesleyan visited the Granite Bowl and left with a 25-23 win over AA Elbert County. Savannah Christian barely nipped fellow 3-a team Wheeler County 14-7.

If you follow Class AA, Carver of Columbus defeated 3-time defending state AA champ Buford 14-0 in a game that matched the top two AA teams.

And in games of national significance, Camden County upset the #2 team in the country, Miami Central, 45-42 in Kingsland [game story]. Meanwhile in Atlanta, North Gwinnett edged Crenshaw High from Los Angeles 17-12 [game story]. Talk about road trips!!
